When Will came in that evening Susanna could see at once that all was not well. His face was haggard with pain and the guard who had come in with him was supporting his arm.

“What happened?” Susanna asked fearfully.

“The workers were fightin’ among themselves, Milady,” the guard replied angrily, “when one o’ them pushed him against a tree. He hit his arm right where the sore bit was.”

Susanna winced. “How do you feel?” she asked as she helped him up to the bedroom. Once there, she tucked him into bed, changed the bandage, and applied some poppy milk salve on the wound. “The cut has opened up a bit but not seriously. If you do it again though, I will have to stitch it. Meanwhile, you are having some milk of the poppy for the pain and to help you go to sleep.”

He sighed and smiled at her. “You are a cruel woman,” he complained.

“Cruel to be kind,” she said firmly. “Go to sleep.”

“Will you come with me?” he asked softly. His eyes were begging her to say yes.

“Later,” she whispered, then kissed him and left. She felt deeply disappointed that they would not be able to make love properly for a while yet; his arm would likely take weeks to heal, but she climbed into bed that night and slept with his arms around her all night long. However, there was no crying out for his dead wife anymore.
